어린 왕자(The Little Prince)와 여우의 길들임(tame)에 대한 영어 명대사 - 생텍쥐페리

 

"One only understands the things that one tames," said the fox. 

"Men have no more time to understand anything. They buy things all ready made at the shops. But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no friends any more. If you want a friend, tame me."

no more : 그 이상 …하지 않다

 

any more : 이제, 더 이상

 

이 명대사는 "어린 왕자(The Little Prince)"의 "Chapter 21 가장 소중한 것은 눈에 보이지 않는다"에서 나오는 대사입니다. 

 

" But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no friends any more. " : 그런데 우정을 살 수 있는 상점은 어디에도 없으니까 사람들은 더 이상 친구가 없는 거야

 

" If you want a friend, tame me. : 네가 친구를 원한다면 나를 길들여 줘..."

 

가장 기억나는 부분.. 요즘 세상을 살면서, 그리고 나이를 한살 두살 더 많이 먹으면서 진정한 친구에 대해 더욱 깊게 생각하게 됩니다...

 

 

 

 

[ 어린 왕자(The Little Prince) - Chapter 21.  ]

 

It was then that the fox appeared. “Good morning,” said the fox.

여우가 나타난 것을 바로 그때였다. ”안녕“ 여우가 말했다.

 

“Good morning,” the little prince responded politely although when he turned around he saw nothing.

”안녕하세요.“ 어린 왕자는 공손하게 대답하고 주위를 둘러보았지만 아무 것도 보이지 않았다.

 

“I am right here,” the voice said, “under the apple tree.”

”난 여기 사과나무 밑에 있어,“ 좀 전의 목소리가 말했다. 

 

“Who are you?” asked the little prince, and added,

“너는 누구니?” 어린 왕자가 말했다. 그리고 덧붙였다.

 

“You are very pretty to look at.”

“넌 참 예쁘구나”

 

“I am a fox,” the fox said.

“난 여우야,” 여우가 말했다.

 

“Come and play with me,” proposed the little prince.

“이리 와서 나랑 놀자.” 어린 왕자가 제안했다.

 

“I so unhappy.” “I cannot play with you,” the fox said.

“난 많이 슬퍼.” “ 난 너와 함께 놀 수 없어” 여우가 말했다.

 

“I am not tamed."

“나는 길들여지지 않았거든.” 

 

“Ah! Please excuse me,” said the little prince.

”아! 미안해“ 어린 왕자가 말했다.

 

But, after some thought, he added : “What does that mean -‘tame’?”

그러나, 잠깐 생각해 본 후에 그는 덧붙여 말했다. “길들인다는 게 뭐야?”

 

“You do not live here,” said the fox.

“넌 여기 살지 않는구나.” 여우가 말했다.

 

“What is the that you are looking for?”

“넌 무얼 찾고 있는데?”

 

“I am looking for men,” said the little prince.

”난 사람들을 찾고 있어.“ 어린 왕자가 말했다.

 

“What does that mean -‘tame’?

”‘길들인다’는 게 무슨 뜻이야?“

 

“Men,” said the fox. 

”사람들은,“ 여우가 말했다. 

 

“They have guns, and they hunt, It is very disturbing. They also raise chickens. These are their only interests. Are you looking for chickens?“

"그들은 총을 가지고 있고, 사냥을 하지. 그건 참 성가신 일이야. 그들은 닭들도 키워. 이것들이 그들의 유일한 즐거움이야. 너는 닭을 찾고 있니?"

 

“No,” said the little prince. “I am looking for friends. What does that mean- ‘tame’?”

“아니야,” 어린 왕자가 말했다. “난 친구들을 찾고 있어. ‘길들인다’는 게 뭐지?”

 

“It is an act too often neglected,” said the fox.

“그건 너무 자주 잊혀지고 있는 행동이야” 여우가 말했다.

 

“It means to establish ties.” “‘To establish ties’?”

“그건 인연을 맺는다는 뜻이야,” “‘인연을 맺는다’고?”

 

“Just that,” said the fox. “To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys.

“맞아,” 여우는 말했다. “나에게 넌 아직 수많은 소년들과 다름없는 한 소년일 뿐이야.

 

And I have no need of you, And you, on your part, have no need of me.

그래서 나는 널 필요로 하지 않아. 또 네 입장에서도 난 너에게 필요가 없어.

 

To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes.

네게 난 수많은 다른 여우들과 같이 단지 한 마리의 여우일 뿐이니까.

 

But if you tame me, then we shall need each other.

하지만 네가 나를 길들인다면 우리는 서로를 필요로 하는 거야.

 

To me, you will be unique in all the would.

내게 너는 세상에서 하나밖에 없는 존재가 되는 거지.

 

To you, I shall be unique in all the would...”

네게 나는 세상에서 하나밖에 없는 여우가 되는 거야...“

 

“I am beginning to understand,” said the little prince.

”이제 이해할 수 있을 거 같아.“ 어린 왕자가 말했다.

 

“There is a flower... I think that she has tamed me...”

“꽃이 한 송이 있었는데... 그 꽃이 나를 길들인 거 같아...”

 

“It is possible,” said the fox. “On the Earth one sees all sorts of things.”

“그럴 거야” 여우가 말했다. “지구에는 별의별 것들이 다 있으니까.”

 

“Oh, but this is not on the Earth!” said the little prince.

“아, 아니야. 그건 지구에 있는 게 아니야!” 어린 왕자가 말했다.

 

The fox seemed perplexed, and very curious.

여우는 몹시 당황해 하며 매우 궁금했다.

 

“On another planet?” “Yes.”

“다른 행성이라고?” “그래.”

 

“Are there hunters on that planet?”

“그 행성에는 사냥꾼들이 있니?”

 

“No.” “Ah, that is interesting! Are there chickens?”

“아니, 없어.” “아, 그거 재미있는데! 닭들은 있어?”

 

“No.” “nothing is perfect,” sighed the fox.

“없어.” “완벽한 것은 아무 것도 없구나.” 여우는 한숨을 내쉬었다.

 

But he came back to his idea.

그러나 여우는 그의 이야기를 계속 했다.    

 

“My life is very monotonous,” the fox said.

”내 생활은 단조로워.“ 여우가 말했다.

 

“I hunt chickens; men hunt me. All the chickens are just alike, and all the are just alike. And, in consequence, I am a little board.

”나는 닭을 사냥하고, 사람들은 나를 사냥하지. 모든 닭은 비슷비슷하고 모든 사람들도 비슷해, 그래서 결과적으로, 나는 좀 심심해.

 

But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my like.

그러나 네가 나를 길들인다면, 태양이 내 삶을 환하게 비추는 것 같을 거야. 

 

I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others.

난 다른 발자국 소리와는 다른 네 발자국 소리를 알게 될 거야.

 

Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground.

다른 발자국 소리들은 나를 서둘러 땅 밑으로 기어들어가게 만들지.

 

Yours will call me, like music, out of my burrow.

너의 발자국 소리는 마치 음악소리처럼 나를 굴 밖으로 불러낼 거야.

 

And then look: you see the grain-fields down yonder?

그리고 저길 봐: 저 아래 밀밭이 보이지?  

 

I do not eat bread. Wheat is of no use to me.

나는 빵을 먹지 않아. 그러니 밀은 내게 아무 쓸모가 없어.

 

The wheat fields have nothing to say to me. And that is sad.

밀밭은 내게 아무 말도 하지 않지. 그건 슬픈 일이야.

 

But you have hair that is the color of gold.

그런데 넌 금빛 머리칼을 지녔거든.

 

Think how wonderful that will be when you have tamed me!

네가 나를 길들인다면 얼마나 굉장할지 생각해 봐! 

 

The grain, which is also golden, will bring me back the thought of you.

금빛 나는 곡식은, 내게 너를 생각나게 할 거야.

 

And I shall love to listen to the wind in the wheat...”

그럼 나는 밀밭에서 부는 바람소리를 좋아하게 될거야...”

 

The fox gazed at the little prince, for a long time.

여우는 어린 왕자를 빤히 쳐다보았다.

 

“Please – tame me!” he said.

“부탁이야 – 나를 길들여 줘!”  여우가 말했다.

 

“I want to, very much,” the little prince replied.

”그래, 나도 그러고 싶어.“ 어린 왕자가 대답했다.

 

“But I have not much time. I have friends to discover, and a great many things to understand.”

”하지만 내겐 시간이 없어. 난 찾아야 할 친구가 있어, 그리고 이해해야할 많은 일들이 있어.“

 

“One only understands the things that one tames,” said the fox.

”우리는 오직 자기가 길들인 것만을 알 수 있는 거야.”여우가 말했다.

 

“Men have no more time to understand anything.

“사람들은 어떤 것도 이해할 수 있는 시간이라곤 없어.”

 

They buy things all ready made at the shops.

그들은 상점에서 이미 다 만들어진 것만 사.

 

But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no friends any more. If you want a friend, tame me...”

그런데 우정을 살 수 있는 상점은 어디에도 없으니까 사람들은 더 이상 친구가 없는 거야, 네가 친구를 원한다면 나를 길들여 줘...“

 

“What must I do, to tame you?” asked the little prince.

”너를 길들이려면 난 무엇을 해야 하는데?“ 어린 왕자가 물었다.

 

“You must be very patient,” replied the fox.

”넌 참을성이 많아야 해.“ 여우가 대답했다.

 

“First you will sit down at a little distance from me – like that - in the grass. I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing.

“처음에는 내게서 좀 떨어져서 이렇게 풀밭에 앉아 있어, 난 너를 곁눈질로 볼 거야. 넌 아무 말도 하지 않을 거야.

 

Words are the source of misunderstandings.

말은 오해의 근원이니까,

 

But you will sit a little closer to me, every day...” next day the little prince came back.

그러나 너는 매일 매일 조금씩 더 가까이 다가와 앉을 거야...” 다음 날 어린 왕자가 돌아왔다.

 

“It would have been better to come back at the same hour,” said the fox.

”언제나 같은 시각에 돌아오면 더 좋은 것 같아.“ 여우가 말했다.

 

“If, for example, you come at four o’clock in the afternoon, then at three o’clock I shall begin to be happy.

”이를테면, 네가 오후 네 시에 온다면 난 세 시부터 행복해지기 시작할 거야. 

 

I shall feel happier and happier as the hour advances.

시간이 지날수록 난 점점 더 행복해질 거야.

 

At four o’clock, I shall already be worrying and jumping about.

네 시에는, 이미 안절부절 못하고 마구 뛰어다니게 될거야.“

 

I shall show you how happy I am! But if you come at just any time

나는 내가 얼마나 행복한지 네게 보여줄 거야. 네가 정해진 시간에 오지 않고

 

I shall never know at what hour my heart is to be ready to greet you...

아무 때나 온다면 몇 시부터 너를 맞이할 마음의 준비를 해야 할 지를 모를 거야.

 

One must observe the proper rites...”

사람은 적절한 의식을 지켜야 해...”

 

“What is a rite?” asked the little prince.

“의식이 뭐야?” 어린 왕자가 물었다. 

 

“Those also are actions too often neglected,” said the fox.

“그것들 또한 너무 자주 잊혀지는 행동이지.” 여우가 말했다.

 

“They are what make one day different from other days, one hour from other hours. 

“그건 어느 하루를 다른 날들과 다르게 만들고, 어느 한 시간을 다른 시간과 다르게 만드는 거야

 

There is a rite, for example, among my hunters. Every Thursday they dance with the village girls.

예를 들면 사냥꾼들에게도 의식이란 게 있어, 그들은 매주 목요일이면 마을의 처녀들과 춤을 춰.”

 

So Thursday is a wonderful day for me!

그래서 목요일은 내게 최고의 날이지!

 

I can take a walk as far as the vineyards.

난 멀리 포도밭까지 산보를 갈 수 있지.

 

But if the hunters danced at just any time, every day other day, and I should never have any vacation at all.”

그러나 사냥꾼들이 아무 때나 춤을 춘다면, 하루하루가 모두 똑같아지잖아. 그럼 난 결코 어떠한 휴가도 없게 될 거야.“

 

So the little prince tamed the fox. And when the hour of his departure drew near - “Ah,” said the fox, “I shall cry.”

그래서 어린 왕자는 여우를 길들였다. 그리고 떠날 시간이 가까워졌을 때 - “아, 난 울 것만 같아.” 여우가 말했다.

 

“It is your own fault,” said the little prince. “I never wished you any sort of harm ; but you wanted me to tame you...”

“그건 네 잘못이야. 나는 너에게 해를 끼치고 싶지 않았어 : 하지만 내가 길들어 주길 바란 건 너야...”

 

“Yes, that is so,” said the fox.

“ 그건 그래,” 여우가 대답했다.

 

“But now you are going to cry!” said the little prince.

“하지만 지금 넌 울려고 하잖아!” 어린 왕자가 말했다.

 

“Yes, that is so,” said the fox. “Then it has done you no good at all!”

“응, 그래.” 여우가 말했다. “그러면 네게 아무 도움도 안 된 거잖아!”

 

“It has done me good,”said the fox,

“내가 얻은 게 있긴 해.” 여우가 말했다

 

“because of the color or the wheat filds.” And then he added :

“밀밭의 색깔 때문에 말이야.” 잠시후 그는 다시 말을 이어갔다.:

 

 

“Go and look again at the roses.

“장미꽃들에게 다시 가봐.

 

You will understand now that yours is unique in all the world.

너는 네 장미꽃이 이 세상에 오직 하나뿐이라는 걸 깨닫게 될 거야.

 

Then come back to say goodbye to me, and I will make you a present of a secret.” The little prince went away, to look again at the roses.

그리고 다시 와. 그럼 내가 네게 비밀스런 선물을 하나 해줄게.” 어린 왕자는 장미꽃을 보기 위해 떠났다.

 

“You are not at all like my rose,” he said.

”너희들은 내 장미와 전혀 달라.“ 그가 말했다.

 

“As yet you are nothing. No one has tamed you, and you have tamed no one.

”너희들은 아직은 아무것도 아니야. 아무도 너희들을 길들이지 않았고, 너희들도 아무도 길들이지 않았어.

 

You are like my fox when I first knew him.

너희들은 내가 여우를 처음 만났을 때와 같아.

 

He was only a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes.

그는 수많은 다른 여우들과 똑같은 그저 그런 여우들일 뿐이었어.

 

But I have made him my friend, and now he is unique ln all the world.”

하지만 내가 그를 친구로 만들었고, 이제 그는 이 세상에 오직 하나뿐인 여우가 되었어.“

 

And the roses were very much embarrassed.

그러자 장미들은 매우 당황해 했다.

 

“You are beautiful, but you are empty,” he went on.

”너희들은 아름다워, 하지만 텅 비어 있지.” 그가 계속 말했다.

 

“One could not die for you. To be sure, an ordinary passerby would think that my rose looked just like you – the rose that belongs to me.

“누구도 너희들을 위해서 죽을 수 없어. 물론 지나가는 평범한 행인들은 생각하겠지. 나의 꽃이 너희들과 똑같이 생겨 보인다고 말이야. - 나에게 속한 그 장미꽃이.

 

But in herself alone she is more important than all the hundreds of you other roses :

하지만 나의 장미 한 송이는 다른 장미 수백 송이들 보다도 더 소중해.:

 

because it is she that I have watered; beause it is she that I have put under the glass globe; because it is she that I have sheltered behind the screen; because it is for her that I have killed the caterpillars (except the two or three that we saved to become butterflies); because it is she that I have listened to, when she grumbled, or boasted, or even sometimes when she said nothing. Because she is my rose.”

왜냐하면 내가 물을 주어 보살펴 준 장미가 바로 그 장미이기 때문이야.; 왜냐하면 내가 유리덮개로 보호해준 것도 그 꽃이기 때문이지. 내가 (나비들을 위해 남겨둔 두 세 마리를 제외하고) 벌레를 잡아준 것도 다 꽃을 위해서 한 일이거든. 그녀가 투덜대거나 자랑할 때, 혹은 아무 말도 하지 않을 때 내가 그녀의 이야기를 들어줬거든. 왜냐하면 그녀는 나의 장미이니까.”

 

And he went back to meet the fox. “Goodbye,” he said,

그리고 그는 여우를 만나러 다시 돌아왔다. “안녕,” 그가 말했다.

 

“Goodbye,” said the fox. 

“안녕,” 여우가 말했다.

 

“And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

“이것이 내 비밀이야, 아주 단순한 비밀이지: 사람이 무언가를 제대로 보려면 반드시 마음으로 보아야 해; 정말 중요한 것은 눈에 보이지 않는 법이거든.”

 

“What is essential is invisible to the eye,” the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember,

“가장 중요한 것은 눈에 보이지 않아.” 확실히 잘 기억하기 위해 어린 왕자는 따라 말했다.

 

“It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important.” “It is the time I have wasted for my rose -” said the little prince, so that he would be sure to remember.

“나의 장미를 그렇게나 소중하게 만든 건 바로 그 꽃을 위해 네가 소비한 그 시간이야.” “내가 나의 장미꽃을 위해 소비한 시간이라구-” 확실히 잘 기억하기 위해 어린 왕자가 말했다.

 

“Men have forgotten this truth,” said the fox.

“사람들은 이 진리를 잊어버렸어.” 여우가 말했다.

 

“But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, forwhat you have tamed. You are responsible for my rose...”

“하지만 넌 그것을 잊으면 안돼, 너는 네가 길들인 것에 대해 영원히 책임을 져야 해.  네가 길들인 장미에 대해 책임이 있어...”

 

“I am responsible for my rose,” the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

“나는 내 장미에 대해 책임이 있어.” 잘 기억하기 위해 어린 왕자는 반복했다.
